2. How Do Compression Stockings Work?
Generally speaking, compression stockings are designed to help alleviate pain and swelling from your legs or arms with the use of graduated compression. They come in various different sizes, lengths, compression levels and brands.
It's difficult and confusing for us and the consumer to keep all the various brands of compression stockings in-stock which is why we have narrowed it down to one brand that has a long history and high reputation of being the leading brand in compression stockings. This brand would be Jobst.
We have a full line of Jobst compression stockings in-stock ranging from all the different compression levels. We have picked out different models of these Jobst compression stockings that have worked for our long-lasting customers. These models include Ultrasheer, Activewear, Sport, Men's Dress and even Maternity.
Compression stockings can also be prescribed by doctors and clinics so that you are more aware of the problem you are having whether it be due to swelling or varicose veins.
To get a better understanding of compression stockings, you must understand the levels of compression and how each level will be beneficial for you.
This level of compression is usually for those who are thinking ahead and may want to use compression stockings early on for preventative measures.
This is the lightest compression that you will find which is why it is usually not recommended for those who already have some type of swelling or varicose veins.
Although it will provide some type of compression, it may not be enough for your blood flow to push up and decrease swelling in your limbs.
This level of compression is the most common and popular level of compression for most people. It's not necessary for you to have any swelling in order to wear these stockings but they may provide comfort for those of you who are on your feet all day or travel often.
The compression level basically means that there is a level of "20" compression towards the end of your feet and it is gradually decreasing to a level of "15" compression towards the rest of your body. This causes the blood to flow upwards so that your swelling may decrease and prevent clotting in one area.
This is a moderate to high level of compression where a physician's advice may be required for you to know that you do need this higher level of compression. These tend to be tighter than the 15-20 level of compression but are not as tight as the 30-40 level of compression.
This is the highest level of compression that is provided by Jobst and usually other brands as well. A physicians note is helpful in knowing that these stockings are right for you. Typically they are prescribed for people who have a heavy form of swelling and varicose veins.
Most compression stocking sizes go up to an XLarge. Anything past this size may result in needing a "custom fit" compression stocking which we do not provide at our location.
For more information on compression stockings and the size you need, you can come into our store and we will measure you based on the length of stocking you choose. If we cannot help you to the best of our ability, we will try and refer you to any other resource that we may have available.
