A CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine helps treat sleep apnea by delivering a continuous flow of pressurized air through a mask to keep your airway open while you sleep. This prevents breathing interruptions, reduces snoring, improves sleep quality, and helps you wake up feeling more rested. CPAP therapy is one of the most effective treatments for obstructive sleep apnea and can improve both your sleep and overall health.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that causes your breathing to repeatedly stop and restart while you sleep. The most common type, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), occurs when the airway becomes blocked, reducing oxygen levels and interrupting restful sleep. Common symptoms include loud snoring, gasping for air during the night, daytime fatigue, and morning headaches. If left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to serious health problems, but treatments such as CPAP therapy can help you breathe normally and sleep more comfortably.

Both CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) and BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) machines are used to treat sleep-related breathing disorders, but they deliver air in different ways.A CPAP machine provides one continuous level of air pressure throughout both inhalation and exhalation. It is the most common treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and works by keeping the airway open while you sleep.A BiPAP machine delivers two different pressure levels—a higher pressure when you inhale (IPAP) and a lower pressure when you exhale (EPAP). This makes breathing feel more natural for some patients and is often prescribed for individuals who require higher pressure settings or have certain respiratory conditions such as central sleep apnea, COPD, neuromuscular disorders, or obesity hypoventilation syndrome.Your healthcare provider or sleep specialist will determine which therapy is most appropriate based on your sleep study results, breathing needs, and overall health.

To ensure your CPAP therapy remains comfortable, effective, and hygienic, it's important to replace your CPAP mask and tubing on a regular basis. Over time, normal wear and tear can reduce the mask's seal, decrease comfort, and affect the performance of your CPAP machine. While replacement schedules may vary based on usage and manufacturer recommendations, a general guideline is:CPAP Mask: Every 3–6 monthsCPAP Tubing: Every 3–12 monthsMask Cushion or Pillows: Every 2–4 weeksDisposable Filters: Every 2–4 weeksReusable Filters: Every 6 monthsHumidifier Water Chamber: Every 6 monthsIf you notice air leaks, cracks, discoloration, stiffness, unpleasant odors, or reduced comfort, it's a good indication that it's time to replace your CPAP supplies sooner.

Keeping your CPAP equipment clean is essential for effective therapy, extending the life of your equipment, and reducing the buildup of dust, oils, and bacteria. Regular cleaning can also help prevent unpleasant odors and maintain a comfortable seal. For best results, follow these general cleaning guidelines:CPAP Mask: Wash the mask cushion daily with warm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Rinse thoroughly and allow it to air dry away from direct sunlight.CPAP Tubing: Clean the tubing weekly by soaking it in warm water with mild soap, then rinse thoroughly and hang it to air dry completely before reconnecting it to your machine.Humidifier Water Chamber: Empty any remaining water each morning and refill it with fresh distilled water before bedtime. Wash the chamber weekly with warm water and mild soap, then allow it to air dry.CPAP Machine: Wipe the exterior of the machine with a soft, slightly damp cloth as needed. Do not immerse the machine in water or allow moisture to enter the unit.CPAP Filters: Check your filters regularly and replace them according to the manufacturer's recommendations or sooner if they become dirty.Always follow the cleaning instructions provided by your CPAP manufacturer, as recommendations may vary by model. Using distilled water in your humidifier chamber is also recommended to help reduce mineral buildup and keep your equipment performing properly. If you need replacement CPAP masks, tubing, filters, humidifier chambers, or other CPAP supplies, Complete Medical Supply carries a wide selection of products to help you maintain your therapy.Important: Avoid using bleach, alcohol, harsh household cleaners, or ozone/UV cleaning devices unless specifically recommended by your CPAP equipment manufacturer, as they may damage your equipment or void the manufacturer's warranty.
