7 Mistakes You're Making with Your CPAP Machine (and How to Fix Them)

Getting a CPAP machine is a big step toward better sleep and a healthier life. If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, you know how exhausting those restless nights can be. But we also know that starting CPAP therapy isn't always easy. It can feel a bit like learning to drive, there are a lot of buttons, parts, and new feelings to get used to.

At Complete Medical Supply, our team helps neighbors throughout Houston and Cypress find the right equipment to feel better every day. We see many people struggle with their machines at first. The good news is that most of these problems have very simple fixes.

If you are finding your CPAP machine a bit frustrating, you aren't alone. Here are the seven most common mistakes we see people make and how you can fix them to get the restful sleep you deserve.

1. Using Tap Water in Your Humidifier

It is very tempting to just fill up your CPAP humidifier at the sink before bed. However, using tap water is one of the most common mistakes that can hurt your machine. Houston tap water contains minerals that can build up inside your water chamber. Over time, this creates a hard, white crust that is difficult to clean and can even lead to bacteria growth.

How to fix it: Always use distilled water. You can find it at almost any grocery store in Houston. Distilled water has had the minerals removed, which keeps your chamber clear and your air clean. If you find yourself in a pinch while traveling, you can use bottled water for one night, but try to get back to distilled water as soon as possible.

2. Overtightening Your Mask

When your mask leaks, your first instinct is probably to pull the straps as tight as they will go. We understand why, you want that air to stay in! But pulling the straps too tight actually makes the seal worse. Most CPAP masks have soft silicone cushions that need a little bit of air inside them to "puff up" and create a seal against your skin. If you squash them flat against your face, they can’t do their job.

How to fix it: Adjust your mask while the machine is running and while you are lying down. Your face shape changes when you lie down! Pull the straps until they are snug but comfortable. If you still have leaks, the problem might be the size or style of the mask rather than how tight it is. You can read more about finding the perfect mask fit here.

3. Forgetting to Replace Your Supplies

A CPAP machine isn't a "buy it and forget it" kind of device. The parts wear out over time. The silicone on your mask cushion will get soft and oily, making it hard to seal. The filters in the back of the machine will get clogged with dust and pet dander. If you use old supplies, you might find yourself feeling tired again because the machine isn't working at 100%.

How to fix it: Keep a simple schedule. We recommend replacing your mask cushion every 1 to 3 months and your filters every month. At our Houston and Cypress locations, we keep these supplies in stock so you can get a same-day replacement whenever you need one. Regular maintenance is the best way to keep your CPAP machine Houston heat and dust at bay!

4. Skipping the Cleaning Routine

We know life is busy, and cleaning a medical device is probably the last thing you want to do. However, your CPAP mask and tubing are warm and moist, the perfect place for germs to hide. If you don't clean them, you might end up with skin breakouts or even a sinus infection.

How to fix it: Make it easy on yourself. Every morning, give your mask a quick wipe with a damp cloth or a CPAP wipe. Once a week, soak your mask, tubing, and water chamber in a sink filled with warm water and a little bit of mild dish soap. Rinse them well and let them air dry out of the sun. Keeping things clean makes the equipment last longer and helps you stay healthy.

5. Not Using the "Ramp" Feature

Does it feel like a windstorm is hitting your face the second you turn on the machine? This can be very scary and make it hard to fall asleep. Many people give up on their CPAP because they feel like they are "fighting" the air pressure.

How to fix it: Most modern machines, like the ones you can see in our best CPAP machines of 2025 guide, have a "Ramp" button. This feature starts the air at a very low, gentle pressure while you are falling asleep. It slowly increases to your full pressure over 20 or 45 minutes once you are already drifting off. It makes a world of difference for your comfort.

6. Ignoring Your Humidifier Settings

Houston is humid, but the air coming through your CPAP machine can still be very dry. If you wake up with a dry mouth, a sore throat, or a stuffy nose, your humidifier settings are likely too low. On the flip side, if you wake up with water splashing in your face (we call this "rainout"), your settings might be too high for the room temperature.

How to fix it: Don't be afraid to adjust your settings! If you are dry, turn the humidity up one notch. If you have water in the tube, turn it down or consider a "heated hose" which keeps the air warm so the water doesn't turn back into liquid. Our team can show you exactly how to change these settings in person at our store.

7. Trying to Do It All Alone

The biggest mistake we see is when people try to struggle through CPAP problems by themselves. They might read confusing things online or get frustrated and put the machine in the closet. We don't want that to happen to you!

How to fix it: Come talk to us. We are a local team that truly cares about your comfort. Unlike big online warehouses, we are right here in your neighborhood.
