Best Folding Electric Wheelchairs of 2026: Lightweight, Collapsible & Travel-Ready
Updated November 2026
A folding electric wheelchair gives you the independence of a power chair without giving up the car trip, the restaurant or the family vacation. The best ones fold in seconds, fit in a trunk and still have enough range for a full day out.
But "lightweight" means very different things from one chair to the next. Some folding power chairs weigh 25 pounds, and others weigh 60 or more. This guide walks you through what actually matters: weight, range, the battery rules for flying, seat fit and cost, so you can choose with confidence.
Key takeaways
Check the weight with the battery in. Most folding power chairs weigh about 35 to 60 pounds. Carbon-fiber models can be much lighter.
Range is listed under ideal conditions. Heat, hills, rough sidewalks and a heavier rider all shorten it.
Flying? A removable lithium battery must be 300 watt-hours or less, and some airlines now require you to carry it on board.
Fit matters as much as features. Check seat width, weight capacity and how easily you can get in and out.
Try before you buy. Fold it, lift it and drive it yourself before you commit.
Who a folding electric wheelchair is best for
A folding power chair is a great fit if you:
Can't propel a manual wheelchair comfortably for long distances
Travel by car, plane or cruise and need a chair that comes with you
Want to get around on your own without a caregiver pushing
Have a caregiver who needs to lift the chair in and out of a vehicle
If you only need a chair for short outings with someone pushing, a lightweight transport chair may be all you need. If you can walk short distances and want a handlebar instead of a joystick, compare a mobility scooter.
What to compare before you buy
Feature | What to look for | Why it matters |
Total weight | Weight with the battery installed | This is what you or a caregiver will actually lift into the car |
Folded size | Measure your trunk and compare | Some chairs fold small but are long or tall |
Range | Miles per charge, plus whether a spare battery is available | Real-world range is usually shorter than the listed number |
Battery | Lithium, with the watt-hours (Wh) listed | Needed for flying; lithium is lighter and lasts longer than older battery types |
Weight capacity | At least 20 to 30 pounds above the user's weight | A chair near its limit wears faster and may struggle on slopes |
Seat width and height | Room at the hips, feet flat on the footrest | Comfort for long sits and safer transfers |
Controls | Joystick on the side the user prefers; caregiver control if needed | Lets a family member steer when the user is tired |
Local service | Someone nearby who can adjust or repair it | An online chair with no local support is hard to fix |
Tip: ask for the weight "with battery." Some listings quote the frame alone, which can be several pounds lighter.
Our pick: the ForceMech G20 Pro
We carry the ForceMech Ultralite G20 Pro at both of our Houston stores because it solves the biggest complaint people have about folding power chairs: weight. Here's what stands out:
About 26 pounds with the battery (25 pounds without), thanks to an aerospace-grade carbon fiber frame
Supports up to 300 pounds
Folds to about 29" x 10" x 28" without tools, so it fits most car trunks and closets
Up to 12 miles per charge from a 24V 12.5Ah lithium battery
Travel-ready: the battery is rated for air and cruise travel
Built-in LED lighting for visibility, plus an optional remote so a caregiver can guide the chair
Winner of a 2026 Golden A' Design Award, in purple, red or blue
Most folding power chairs weigh well over 35 pounds, so a chair that a caregiver can lift with one hand is a real difference day to day. See the full specs on our ForceMech G20 Pro page, or stop by to try it.
Flying with a folding electric wheelchair
Lithium-battery wheelchairs can fly, but plan ahead. Under FAA rules:
If the battery has to come off the chair, it can be no larger than 300 watt-hours and must go in the cabin, with the terminals protected.
You can bring one spare battery up to 300 Wh, or two spares up to 160 Wh each, in your carry-on.
Tell the airline where the battery is, and allow extra time at check-in.
Airlines can set stricter rules. Southwest, for example, now requires passengers to remove lithium wheelchair batteries and carry them on board, and no longer accepts batteries over 300 Wh (TravelPulse). Always call your airline before you book.
How to check your watt-hours: multiply the battery's volts by its amp-hours. The G20 Pro's 24V 12.5Ah battery works out to 300 Wh, right at the limit.
Folding electric wheelchair vs. other options
Folding power chair | Mobility scooter | Lightweight manual or transport chair | |
How it's driven | Joystick, by the user or a caregiver | Handlebar (tiller) | Self-propelled or pushed by a caregiver |
Best for | Independence indoors and out, travel | People who can walk short distances | Short outings, appointments, backup chair |
Weight | About 25 to 60+ lbs | Heavier; most break into pieces | As light as 13 to 14 lbs |
Tight spaces | Turns in a small circle | Needs more room | Very maneuverable |

How much does a folding electric wheelchair cost?
Basic folding power chairs sold online start around $1,000 but many of them are not nearly as close In quality as the more brand specific and costlier models. Lighter carbon-fiber models, longer-range batteries and premium features cost more. When you compare prices, add in what's easy to forget:
A spare battery for longer days or travel
A seat cushion for comfort on long sits
Someone local to adjust, service and repair the chair

Does Medicare cover a folding electric wheelchair?
Medicare Part B can help pay for a power wheelchair, but only when it's medically needed to get around inside your home, a cane, walker or manual chair isn't enough, and you buy from a Medicare-enrolled supplier (Medicare Interactive). A chair mainly for travel, outings or getting in and out of the car usually doesn't qualify.
Where we fit in: Complete Medical Supply is a retail medical supply store. We don't bill Medicare or insurance. You pay out of pocket and choose the chair that fits your life, including one built for travel.
Ways to pay
0% financing: CareCredit offers 0% interest on purchases of $200 or more, paid off over 6 or 12 months.
HSA or FSA: A power wheelchair bought for a medical condition can often be paid with pre-tax dollars. Check with your plan and see IRS Publication 502.
Itemized receipt: We'll give you one if you want to submit an out-of-network claim to your insurance yourself.
Test-drive checklist
Fold and unfold it yourself. How many steps does it take?
Lift it with the battery in, the way you'll load it into your car.
Drive it forward, backward and through a doorway.
Try a small ramp or curb cut.
Sit for a few minutes. Are your hips and back comfortable?
Check the joystick side, and ask about a caregiver remote.
Ask how long the battery takes to charge and what a spare costs.
Frequently asked questions
What is the lightest folding electric wheelchair?
Carbon-fiber chairs are the lightest. The ForceMech G20 Pro weighs about 26 pounds with its battery, while most aluminum folding power chairs weigh 35 to 60 pounds.
How far can a folding electric wheelchair go on one charge?
Most list somewhere around 10 to 15 miles. Real-world range is usually lower in heat, on hills or rough ground, and with a heavier rider. A spare battery doubles your range.
Can I take a folding power wheelchair on a plane?
Usually, yes. Removable lithium batteries must be 300 watt-hours or less and travel in the cabin, and some airlines require you to remove the battery before boarding. Call your airline before you fly.
Can a folding electric wheelchair handle grass or gravel?
Light folding chairs do best on pavement, sidewalks and indoor floors. Short stretches of packed grass are usually fine, but deep gravel, sand and steep slopes are hard on any lightweight chair.
Do you rent electric wheelchairs?
We rent manual and transport wheelchairs. See our wheelchair rentals. Electric wheelchairs are available to buy, with 0% financing.
